Reading a German XRechnung

XRechnung files contain the same information as a paper invoice, but as structured XML. Double-clicking the file usually shows raw code. The viewer turns it into a normal-looking invoice and translates every label: Rechnungsnummer becomes invoice number, Leitweg-ID is shown as buyer reference, Zahlbetrag is the amount due.

The content itself – company names, item descriptions and notes – stays in the language the seller used, so nothing is changed or guessed. Amounts are shown exactly as they appear in the file.

Checking an XRechnung

Below the invoice you get a quick check of mandatory fields and totals, including the XRechnung-specific rules. If you mainly want to verify a file, the validator page puts the check first. Peppol UBL invoices from other countries open in the Peppol invoice viewer.

XRechnung viewer FAQ

What is an XRechnung?

XRechnung is the German national standard for electronic invoices, based on the European norm EN 16931. It is a pure XML file without a visual layout, available in two syntaxes: UBL and UN/CEFACT CII.

How do I open an XRechnung file?

Drag the .xml file into the box above or click “Choose file”. The invoice appears immediately with English labels. Nothing to install.

What is the Leitweg-ID?

The Leitweg-ID is a routing identifier used by German public authorities. In XRechnung it is mandatory and stored in the buyer reference field. The viewer shows it at the top.

Can I convert an XRechnung to PDF?

Yes – use “Save as PDF / Print” to get a readable PDF copy. Keep the original XML file as well: for tax purposes the XML is the invoice.
